Chain Lengths for Men: Size Chart, Neck Sizes and Iced Chains
The standard chain lengths for men are 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches. On an average neck, 18 inches sits at the base of the neck, 20 at the collarbone, 22 just below it and 24 in the middle of the chest. If you're unsure, start at 20 inches for a plain chain, 22 inches for a chain with a pendant, and go one size longer than you think for any iced chain 10mm or wider.
A chart is only a starting point. This guide also covers the three things that change where a chain actually sits: your neck size, the width of the chain and the pendant hanging from it. We sell tennis, Cuban and Monaco moissanite chains from 16 to 24 inches, and this guide answers the sizing questions that come up before an order.
Key takeaways
- 20 inches is the most common men's chain length and the safest choice if you don't know the neck size.
- Every extra inch of chain drops the front by about half an inch, so going from 20 to 24 inches lowers it by roughly 2 inches.
- Measure your neck and add 2 inches for a close fit, about 4 inches for the collarbone and 6 to 8 inches for the chest.
- Wide chains sit higher than thin chains of the same length. Go up one size for 10mm and wider.
- A pendant adds its own height to the drop. Most pendants look right on 22 or 24 inches.
- When layering, leave about 2 inches between chains, for example 20 and 22, or 20 and 24 with a pendant.
Men's chain length chart
This chart assumes a neck of roughly 15 to 16 inches, which is what most length charts are built around. If your neck is bigger, every chain sits higher than shown. If it's smaller, every chain sits lower.
| Length | In cm | Where it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 inches | 40.6 cm | Tight around the neck, choker fit | Thin chains on slim necks; rare for men |
| 18 inches | 45.7 cm | Base of the neck | A clean, close look with no pendant; slim builds |
| 20 inches | 50.8 cm | On the collarbone | The everyday length; works on most men |
| 22 inches | 55.9 cm | Just below the collarbone | Pendants, bigger builds, wide iced chains |
| 24 inches | 61.0 cm | Middle of the chest | Larger pendants, layering, tall or broad men |
| 26 to 30 inches | 66 to 76 cm | Lower chest | Big statement pendants, over-the-shirt looks |
Our product pages round these to 45, 50, 55 and 60 cm.
How to work out your chain length from your neck size
Charts are a starting point. Your neck size is what decides it. Here's the method:
- Wrap a soft tape measure, or a piece of string, around the base of your neck where a shirt collar sits. Don't pull it tight.
- Write that number down. That's your neck size. If you know your shirt collar size, that's close enough.
- Add 2 inches for a close fit at the base of the neck. Add about 4 inches to land on the collarbone. Add 6 to 8 inches for the chest.
- Round to the nearest standard length.
The reason this works: a chain hangs from the back of your neck as a loop. The extra length beyond your neck size is split between the two sides, so every extra inch of chain drops the front by about half an inch. That's why going from 20 to 24 inches only lowers the chain about 2 inches on your chest, not 4.
| Neck size | Close fit (base of neck) | Collarbone | Chest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 inches | 16 inches | 18 inches | 20 to 22 inches |
| 15 inches | 18 inches | 20 inches | 22 to 24 inches |
| 16 inches | 18 inches | 20 inches | 22 to 24 inches |
| 17 inches | 20 inches | 22 inches | 24 inches |
| 18 inches | 20 inches | 22 inches | 24 to 26 inches |
| 19 inches or more | 22 inches | 24 inches | 26 inches or longer |
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat on a table, straighten it and measure end to end with the clasp closed. That's the length to order again, or to size up from.
Does chain width change the length you need?
Yes. A wide chain sits higher on your neck than a thin chain of the same length.
A 3mm tennis chain is thin and flexible, so it falls close to the length on the tag. A 10mm clustered tennis chain or a 20mm Monaco chain is wide and fairly stiff. It lies on top of your neck and shoulders rather than tucking around them, and its inner edge, the part that touches your neck, is shorter than the length measured along the chain. The wider the chain, the bigger that gap.
Wide chains also look shorter. A 20mm chain covers more of your neck and collarbone, so an 18-inch Monaco can look like a choker on a man who wears an 18-inch thin chain comfortably.
| Chain width | How it wears | Our starting point |
|---|---|---|
| 3mm to 4mm | Light and flexible, close to the tag length | Your normal length; 20 inches if unsure |
| 5mm to 6mm | Noticeable on its own, still flexible | Your normal length; 20 or 22 inches |
| 10mm (clustered tennis, Cuban) | Wide and heavier, sits higher | One size up from your normal length; 22 inches if unsure |
| 14mm to 20mm (Monaco) | Very wide and stiff, sits highest | One size up; 22 inches if unsure |
Our 20mm Monaco chain comes in 18, 20 and 22 inches, while our thinner tennis chains go up to 24. The 10mm moissanite clustered tennis chain is our best seller, and if you normally wear 20 inches in a thin chain, 22 inches is usually the better pick for it.
For more on picking a width, our tennis chain sizes guide covers 3mm to 10mm in detail.
Best chain length for men with a pendant
A pendant hangs below the chain, so it adds its own height to the drop. A 2-inch cross on a 20-inch chain ends up roughly where a 24-inch plain chain would sit. Heavier pendants also pull the chain into a V and lower it a little more.
- Small pendants (under about 1.5 inches): 20 or 22 inches.
- Medium pendants (about 1.5 to 2.5 inches): 22 inches. This is the length we'd pick for most crosses and name pendants.
- Large or heavy pendants (over about 2.5 inches): 24 inches, so the pendant clears your collarbone and sits flat on your chest.
Pair the chain to the pendant's weight, too. A big iced pendant on a 3mm chain looks top-heavy and puts strain on the chain. Our moissanite pendant buying guide covers which chain widths suit which pendants.
18 vs 20 vs 22 vs 24 inch chains on a man
18 inch chain
Sits at the base of the neck and shows above most T-shirt collars. Good for a thin tennis chain on a slim neck. On a neck of 17 inches or more it will feel tight, and on a wide chain it reads as a choker.
20 inch chain
The most common men's length. It rests on the collarbone, shows with a crew-neck tee and sits inside an open collar. If you're buying without knowing the neck size, this is the one.
22 inch chain
Just below the collarbone. The best all-round length for pendants, for bigger builds, and for wide iced chains like a 10mm cluster or a Monaco. It also gives you room under a crew neck if you want the chain to show over the shirt.
24 inch chain
Mid-chest. Good for large pendants and as the longer chain in a layered pair. On a slim man with no pendant it can look loose.
How to layer chains by length
Leave about 2 inches between each chain so they sit in separate lines and don't tangle as much. Common pairs:
- 20 + 22 inches: two tennis chains of different widths, for example 3mm and 5mm.
- 20 + 24 inches: a plain or tennis chain on top and a pendant on the longer chain.
- 18 + 20 + 24 inches: a three-chain stack, with the widest chain usually on the shortest length.
Put the pendant on the longest chain so it doesn't sit on top of the others. Tennis chains do tangle when layered, so take them off one at a time.
Common mistakes: buying the same length in a wide chain as in a thin one; picking 18 inches for a pendant (it ends up on the collarbone, half hidden); and measuring a chain while it's bunched up instead of laid flat.
Does a longer chain cost more?
A little. Longer chains use more metal and, on tennis chains, more stones. Our 3mm tennis chain goes from 12.4 carats (diamond equivalent weight) at 16 inches to 18.7 carats at 24 inches. As of October 15, 2026, these are the prices on three of our best sellers:
| Chain | Shortest | Longest |
|---|---|---|
| 3mm moissanite tennis chain | 16 inches: $349.99 | 24 inches: $386.99 |
| 5mm moissanite tennis chain | 18 inches: $449.99 | 24 inches: $469.99 |
| 10mm moissanite clustered tennis chain | 18 inches: $769.99 | 24 inches: $799.99 |
All three are set with D color VVS1 moissanite, and the material listed on each product page is 18K white gold plating. The gap between the shortest and longest length is $20 to $37, so choose on fit, not price.
Buying a chain as a gift without his neck size
A few ways to get the length right without asking:
- Borrow a chain he already wears and measure it flat, clasp closed.
- Check a shirt label. The collar size is close to his neck size in inches. Add about 4 inches for a collarbone fit.
- If you have nothing to go on, buy 20 inches for a thin chain and 22 inches for a pendant or a chain 10mm and wider. On a big build, go one size longer again.

Chain lengths for men: common questions
What length chain should a man wear?
Most men wear 20 to 22 inches. Take your neck size and add about 4 inches to land the chain on your collarbone, then add 2 more inches if you're wearing a pendant or a chain 10mm or wider.
What is the most common chain length for men?
20 inches. It sits on the collarbone on an average neck and works with or without a small pendant.
Is a 20 inch chain too short for a man?
Not for most men. It can feel short on a neck of 18 inches or more, or on a wide chain like a 20mm Monaco, where 22 inches is usually better.
What length chain is best for a pendant?
22 inches for most pendants and 24 inches for large or heavy ones. The pendant adds its own height, so it hangs lower than the chain alone.
Is an 18 or 20 inch chain better?
20 inches suits more men. Choose 18 inches only for a thin chain with no pendant on a neck of about 16 inches or less.
What chain length should I buy as a gift?
Measure a chain he already owns if you can. If not, 20 inches for a thin chain and 22 inches for a pendant or a wide iced chain.
