Moissanite Pendant Buying Guide: Styles, Chains and What to Check

To buy a good moissanite pendant, check four things: the stone grade (look for D color VVS1 moissanite), the paperwork (a GRA report), the metal as the listing's Material line describes it, and a chain that fits the bail and sits where you want it. Get those right and only the design is left to choose.

We've sold moissanite jewelry from US and UK warehouses since 2019. This moissanite pendant buying guide covers the styles we make, pairing a pendant with a chain, what to check, custom vs ready-made, care, and live prices as of October 13, 2026.

Key takeaways

  1. Check the paperwork: every moissanite piece we sell ships with a GRA report and passes a standard diamond tester.
  2. Fit the chain to the bail first. Our 5mm bails take chains up to 5mm wide, not Cuban or Monaco chains.
  3. A 20 inch chain sits on the collarbone. Every 2 extra inches drops the pendant about 1 inch.
  4. Plated metal isn't gold all the way through. Our silver-finish pendants list 18K white gold plating.
  5. The in-stock pendants in our table cost $149.99 to $338.99 as of October 13, 2026. Custom pendants are made to order and take 4 to 6 weeks.

What is a moissanite pendant?

A pendant is the piece that hangs from a chain. A moissanite pendant is set with moissanite, a lab-grown gemstone made of silicon carbide. It looks very like diamond but is a different mineral, as our guide is moissanite a real diamond? explains.

It suits pendants for three reasons. At 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale (diamond is 10), it resists scratches from everyday wear. Its dispersion of about 0.104, against diamond's 0.044, throws more rainbow flashes. And it costs a small fraction of a diamond the same size. The trade-off: moissanite isn't rare, so resale value is low. Buy it to wear, not as an investment.

Moissanite pendant styles we make

These are the designs we list today. The white stones in each are D color VVS1 moissanite.

  • Cross pendants. Our Moissanite Cross Pendant is a single row of round stones. We also make a Celtic Cross covered in small stones, and a Celtic Cross set with blue moissanite. See all our moissanite cross pendants.
  • Faith pieces. A Jesus piece with oval stones around the crown, and Iced Praying Hands with a hanging cross.
  • Symbols. The Ankh and the Iced Eye.

We also make custom name pendants to order. Our custom moissanite pendants guide covers them.

How to pair a pendant with a chain

Work in this order: bail, then width, then length.

1. Check the bail

The bail is the loop at the top of the pendant that the chain runs through. If the chain or its clasp is wider than the bail, it won't go on. Our pendant bails are 5mm in diameter, so they take chains up to 5mm wide, like our 4mm rope chain and our 3mm and 5mm moissanite tennis chains. They won't fit Monaco chains, tennis chains wider than 5mm, or our moissanite Cuban chains, which start at 8mm.

Buying the chain elsewhere? Measure the inside of the bail and compare it with the chain's width in millimeters, clasp included.

Most of our pendants come on their own ("No Chain") or with an 18, 20 or 24 inch rope chain. Pick No Chain if you'll wear it on a chain you own or on one of our moissanite tennis chains.

2. Match the width to the pendant

A thin chain under a big pendant looks lost, and the weight pulls on a few links. A chain that's too heavy hides the pendant. For our pendants, 3mm to 5mm looks right. A rope chain keeps the focus on the pendant; a tennis chain adds a second line of sparkle.

As of October 13, 2026, our 3mm moissanite tennis chain costs $349.99 (16 inches) to $386.99 (24 inches), and the 5mm costs $449.99 (18 inches) to $469.99 (24 inches). Both list 18K white gold plating.

3. Choose the length

Length decides where the pendant lands, and the pendant hangs below the chain by its own height.

Chain length Where the chain sits Good with a pendant for
18 inches Close to the neck Small pendants, or the top chain in a stack
20 inches On the collarbone A safe middle choice for most pendants
22 inches Upper chest Keeping the pendant clear of a T-shirt collar
24 inches Lower on the chest Bigger pendants, or the bottom chain in a stack

Every 2 extra inches of chain drops the pendant about 1 inch, because the extra length is split between both sides of your neck. And neck size matters: a 20 inch chain sits higher on a 17 inch neck than on a 15 inch one. Run a string around your neck to where you want the top of the pendant, then measure the string. Wearing a plain chain too? Make the pendant chain at least 2 inches longer so they don't tangle.

What to check before you buy a moissanite pendant

  1. Stone grade. Look for D color and VVS1 clarity. On the GIA color scale, D is the top, colorless grade. VVS1 means inclusions are so slight a skilled grader struggles to see them at 10x magnification. Moissanite uses the same scales, and every pendant we price below is D color VVS1.
  2. Paperwork. Every moissanite piece we sell ships with a GRA report listing the stone's color, clarity and size, with a number you can check. GRA grades moissanite and isn't one of the big diamond labs such as GIA or IGI. Fakes exist, so learn how to spot a fake GRA report.
  3. Tester result. Our moissanite passes a standard diamond tester, which measures heat conductivity. A multi-tester that also checks electrical conductivity flags it as moissanite. That's normal, not a sign of a fake.
  4. Metal. Read the Material line, not just the title. Our silver-finish pendants list precision-engineered 18K white gold plating. Gold versions list 18K gold plating or 18k vermeil, depending on the listing. Plating is a layer of gold over a base metal, and it can wear over years. Our lifetime warranty covers the finish fading or discoloring.
  5. Weight. Most of our pendants are iced, covered in many small stones, so a carat figure in a title, like the 2.8CT on our Iced Praying Hands, is the total for all of them. Give heavier pendants a sturdier chain.
  6. Setting. Most of our pendants use prong settings, which let more light into each stone. Our lifetime warranty covers loose or lost stones and breakage in normal wear.

Moissanite or CZ? We also sell cheaper pendants set with cubic zirconia on gold-plated metal alloy. They look similar in photos, but CZ won't pass a diamond tester and isn't graded. If the title says Moissanite and D Color VVS1, it's moissanite.

Custom vs ready-made moissanite pendants

Ready-made suits most people: you see what you get, it arrives fast, and it costs less. Go custom when you want your name, initials or a word nobody else wears. Our custom moissanite pendants guide covers name and letter designs, and our custom moissanite pendant collection has the options.

Live prices as of October 13, 2026:

All three were in stock when we checked. Custom pendants take 4 to 6 weeks to make. In the US, pieces in stock at our US warehouse ship the same day if you order before 2pm ET on a business day, and arrive in 1 to 2 business days. Fully custom one-of-one designs take about 6 weeks from design approval.

Before you order: under our refund policy, moissanite and custom pieces are final sale, though still covered by our lifetime warranty. Check the spelling, chain length and bail fit before you pay.

How to care for a moissanite pendant

Moissanite doesn't cloud. If your pendant looks dull, it's skin oil, lotion or soap on the stones. To clean it:

  1. Soak it for 5 to 10 minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush behind the stones and around the bail.
  3. Rinse with the sink plugged and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Keep it away from chlorine, bleach and abrasive cleaners. They can damage plating, and our warranty doesn't cover chemical damage, so take it off to swim. Store it alone in its pouch, since moissanite can scratch other jewelry. Every few months, check the bail for wear and the stones for movement. Our moissanite cleaning guide has more tips.

Moissanite pendant buying guide: common questions

What size chain fits a moissanite pendant?
Any chain up to 5mm wide fits our pendants, because the bails are 5mm in diameter. A 3mm to 5mm rope or tennis chain suits most of them. For other brands, measure the inside of the bail.

Can you put a moissanite pendant on a Cuban link chain?
Not with our pendants. Their 5mm bails won't fit our moissanite Cuban chains, which start at 8mm wide. Use a rope chain or a tennis chain up to 5mm wide instead.

Can you put a pendant on a tennis chain?
Yes, if the bail is big enough. Ours fit tennis chains up to 5mm wide, including our 3mm and 5mm moissanite tennis chains.

Does a moissanite pendant pass a diamond tester?
Yes. A standard heat-based diamond tester reads moissanite as diamond. A multi-tester that also checks electrical conductivity identifies it as moissanite. Ours ship with a GRA report.

How much does a moissanite pendant cost?
As of October 13, 2026, our in-stock cross and ankh pendants cost $149.99 to $338.99. Custom pendants cost more and are made to order.

How long does a custom moissanite pendant take?
4 to 6 weeks to handcraft, then it ships tracked. Ready-made pendants in stock at our US warehouse ship the same day if you order before 2pm ET on a business day.

Does a moissanite pendant tarnish?
The stone never does. Plated metal can fade over years, faster around chlorine or harsh cleaners. Our lifetime warranty covers fading or discoloration of the finish, but not chemical damage.
