Iced Out Chain Guide: Styles, Stones and Prices (2026)

An iced out chain is a necklace covered in small set stones, so the whole chain sparkles instead of just a pendant. The stones can be cubic zirconia (CZ), moissanite, lab-grown diamond or natural diamond, and that one choice decides most of the price, how long it keeps its shine and whether it passes a diamond tester.

Iced chains are most of what we sell. This guide covers the main iced out chain styles, what they are made of, what one costs today, how to spot a cheap one from photos, and which width and length to pick.

Key takeaways

  1. "Iced out" describes the look, not the stone. Always find the stone type in the listing title or specs before you buy.
  2. The five main styles are the tennis chain, clustered tennis chain, Monaco chain, iced Cuban link and baguette chain.
  3. Most iced chains are plated, not solid gold. Read the material line: plating over brass, steel or silver is normal, but it should be stated.
  4. Moissanite passes a standard diamond tester. CZ does not. A GRA report should match the stones on the chain you receive.
  5. For a first iced chain, a 3mm to 5mm tennis chain at 20 inches is the safest pick. Go wider only if you want the chain to be the main piece.
  6. Check the clasp, the back of the links and how the chain lies, not just the front photo.

What is an iced out chain?

"Iced out" is slang for jewelry covered in stones. An iced out chain has stones set into the links themselves, along the whole length or most of it. A plain gold chain with a diamond pendant is not iced out. A tennis chain with a stone in every link is.

The term grew out of hip-hop, where a fully iced chain was the loudest way to show success. Today it covers everything from a slim 3mm tennis chain you wear every day to a 20mm Monaco chain built to be seen across a room.

Two words get used loosely in listings, so it helps to know what they really mean:

  • "VVS" is a clarity grade. It describes inclusions inside a stone, not what the stone is. A listing can say "VVS" and still be CZ or moissanite.
  • "Iced" or "bust down" only tell you the piece is covered in stones. Neither names the stone or the metal.

Iced out chain styles compared

Almost every iced chain is one of five styles. They differ in how many stones sit in each link, how wide they run and how they move on the neck.

Style How it is built Common widths Look and feel Our moissanite price (as of November 6, 2026)
Tennis chain One round stone per link in a flexible line 2mm to 6mm Clean, light, easy to wear daily or layer 3mm: $349.99 to $386.99
5mm: $449.99 to $469.99
6mm: $569.99 to $659.99
Clustered tennis chain A center stone ringed by small stones in each link About 6mm to 12mm Reads much bigger than its stone sizes; heavier and stiffer 10mm: $769.99 to $799.99
Monaco chain Wide, flat, interlocking links paved with stones About 10mm to 20mm Very bold, sits flat on the chest 20mm: $689.99 to $719.99
Iced Cuban link Curb-style links with stones set across the top About 8mm to 20mm Heavy, classic hip-hop look Not covered in this table
Baguette chain Rectangular step-cut stones in each link About 4mm to 8mm Flatter, more architectural shine 6mm: $499.99 to $569.99

Tennis chain vs Cuban link: which iced style?

This is the choice most people get stuck on. A tennis chain is all stone: it is lighter, moves like a ribbon and works with a pendant or on its own. An iced Cuban link is mostly metal with stones on top: it is heavier, chunkier and carries more of a classic street look. If you want shine first, pick a tennis chain. If you want weight and presence, pick a Cuban. Our plain vs iced out Cuban link guide covers the Cuban side in more detail.

What are iced out chains made of?

Every iced chain has two parts: the stones and the metal holding them. Listings often explain one and stay vague about the other, so check both.

The stones

Stone Mohs hardness Passes a standard diamond tester? What to expect
Cubic zirconia (CZ) About 8 to 8.5 No Cheapest. Looks bright new, but scratches and clouds faster with daily wear.
Moissanite 9.25 Yes, on standard thermal testers Harder than CZ, more fire than diamond, a fraction of diamond prices. Grade it by color and clarity like a diamond.
Lab-grown diamond 10 Yes Chemically diamond. Priced by carat, so a fully iced chain costs much more than moissanite.
Natural diamond 10 Yes The most expensive option, priced by carat weight and quality.

Our iced chains in this guide use D color VVS1 moissanite, and each comes with a GRA report. D is the top of the color scale (colorless) and VVS1 is a very high clarity grade. We explain the tester question in full in does moissanite pass a diamond tester.

The metal

Very few iced chains are solid gold, because a wide chain in solid gold gets heavy and expensive fast. Most are one of these:

  • Plated brass or alloy: the most common budget base.
  • Plated stainless steel: strong and does not rust.
  • Plated silver (vermeil): gold or rhodium over sterling silver.
  • Solid gold: 10K, 14K or 18K all the way through. Rare for iced chains outside custom work.

Be honest with yourself about which one you are paying for. Our moissanite chains above list their material as "18K white gold plating" with PVD reinforcement; the silver in the product name is the color, not the metal. Under our lifetime warranty, fading, discoloration or tarnishing of the finish is covered (our refund policy, read November 6, 2026).

Watch the wording: "Real gold" on a chain that is actually plated is a red flag. A clear listing names the stone, the base metal and the plating.

How much does an iced out chain cost?

Price comes down to three things, in this order:

  1. The stone. CZ is cheapest, moissanite costs more, and lab-grown and natural diamond jump into a different price bracket because they are priced by total carat weight. An iced chain can hold dozens of carats.
  2. Width and stone count. A 10mm clustered or 20mm Monaco chain uses far more stones and setting work than a 3mm tennis chain.
  3. Metal. Plating keeps the price down; solid gold adds the cost of the gold by weight.

For our moissanite line, that works out at $349.99 for a 16-inch 3mm tennis chain up to $799.99 for a 24-inch 10mm clustered chain, as of November 6, 2026. Length adds a little each step because longer chains need more stones.

How to spot a fake or low-quality iced out chain

Most bad iced chains look fine in a studio photo. These checks catch the problems before you pay, whoever you buy from, us included:

  1. Find the stone name. The title or spec list should say CZ, moissanite, lab-grown diamond or diamond. "Iced", "VVS" or "simulated" alone is not enough.
  2. Find the material line. It should name the base metal and any plating. If it only says "gold", ask.
  3. Ask for the stone report. Moissanite usually comes with a GRA report and diamonds with an IGI or GIA report. The report should match the stone sizes on the chain.
  4. Look at the setting. Each stone should sit level, with prongs holding it on all sides. Gaps, tilted stones or glue marks are signs stones may come loose.
  5. Look at the back. Clean, even links on the back are a sign of careful work. Rough or hollow-looking backs are not.
  6. Check the clasp. A wide iced chain needs a strong box clasp with a safety latch. A thin lobster clasp on a heavy chain is a weak point.
  7. Watch it move. In a video the chain should lie flat and flow. Stiff sections or links that flip point to poor assembly.

A diamond tester helps with step one: moissanite and diamond both read as diamond on a standard thermal tester, while CZ does not. A moissanite tester or a jeweler's multi-tester can tell moissanite from diamond.

Which iced out chain should you get?

Width

  • 3mm to 4mm: subtle, everyday, easy to layer or wear with a pendant. Good first iced chain.
  • 5mm to 6mm: clearly iced from a distance, still comfortable daily.
  • 10mm clustered: the statement size most men go for when the chain is the main piece.
  • 15mm to 20mm Monaco or Cuban: maximum presence. Suits broader builds and nights out more than the office.

Length

Length Where it sits on most men Best for
18 inches High on the neck, close to a choker Slim tennis chains, slim necks
20 inches On the collarbone Most men and most styles: the safe pick
22 inches Just below the collarbone Wide chains, bigger necks, a relaxed hang
24 inches Upper chest Layering under a shorter chain or wearing a pendant

Wide chains need a little more length, because a wide band tight at the base of the neck tends to flip. Our chain lengths for men guide has a full neck-size chart, and our clustered tennis chain guide goes deeper on the 10mm.

Before you order: our moissanite pieces are final sale under our refund policy (read November 6, 2026), so measure first. If you are between two lengths on a wide chain, go up.

How to keep an iced out chain shining

  • Take it off for the pool, the shower and the gym. Our warranty does not cover damage from chlorine, bleach or abrasive cleaners.
  • Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, then pat it dry. Lotion and skin oil are what dull stones most.
  • Store it flat or hanging, away from other chains, so stones do not scratch each other and links do not tangle.
  • Check the clasp and a few stones every month. Catching a loose stone early is much easier than replacing a lost one.

Iced out chain: common questions

What is an iced out chain?
An iced out chain is a necklace with small stones set into the links along most or all of its length, so the whole chain sparkles. The stones can be CZ, moissanite, lab-grown diamond or natural diamond.

What are iced out chains made of?
Stones set into a metal chain. Most use CZ or moissanite set in plated brass, steel or silver; solid gold and diamond versions exist but cost far more.

How much does an iced out chain cost?
It depends mostly on the stone. Our D color VVS1 moissanite iced chains cost $349.99 to $799.99 as of November 6, 2026, while lab-grown and natural diamond versions cost more because they are priced by carat weight.

Are iced out chains real diamonds?
Most are not. Most iced chains use CZ or moissanite, so check the stone named in the listing and ask for a GRA, IGI or GIA report.

Will an iced out chain pass a diamond tester?
Moissanite and diamond chains pass a standard thermal diamond tester. CZ chains do not.

Do iced out chains tarnish?
Plated chains can fade over time, especially with chlorine, sweat and chemicals. Keep them dry and clean; our lifetime warranty covers fading and tarnishing of the finish.
