White Gold Chain for Men: Solid vs Plated, Prices and Styles

A white gold chain for men is a chain made from gold mixed with white metals such as palladium or nickel, then usually plated with rhodium to give it a bright, icy white color. Solid 10k, 14k and 18k white gold chains are priced on their gold weight, so a heavy one costs thousands. A white gold plated chain looks the same out of the box for a fraction of that, but the white gold is only on the surface.

We sell white gold plated moissanite chains, not solid white gold chains, so we have no reason to oversell either one. This guide explains what white gold actually is, how 10k, 14k and 18k compare, what a chain should cost, the main styles, and six checks to make before you pay.

Key takeaways

  1. White gold is not a natural color. It is a gold alloy that is usually rhodium plated, and that plating wears over time on solid and plated chains alike.
  2. 10k white gold is 41.7% pure gold, 14k is 58.3% and 18k is 75%. 14k is the usual choice for a chain.
  3. A solid white gold chain is priced mostly on gram weight and the gold price. No gram weight on the listing is a warning sign.
  4. US FTC rules say a plated chain should be sold as plated. "14k white gold" on its own should mean 14k all the way through.
  5. If you want the iced look rather than a plain link, a white gold plated chain set with D color VVS1 moissanite costs less than most solid white gold chains with no stones at all.

What is a white gold chain?

Pure gold is yellow. To make "white" gold, jewelers mix gold with white metals. Palladium and nickel are the most common. The result is a pale gray-yellow alloy, not a bright white one. That is why almost all white gold jewelry is then electroplated with rhodium, a hard, very white metal from the platinum family. The rhodium is what you see in the store.

So when you buy a white gold chain, you are really choosing two things:

  • The core: solid white gold (10k, 14k or 18k all the way through), or another metal such as brass, steel or silver with a white gold finish on top.
  • The surface: on almost every white gold chain, a plating layer. On solid white gold it is rhodium over gold. On a plated chain it is a white gold or rhodium layer over the base metal.

Both wear over time. The difference is what is underneath when they do, and what you paid to get there.

10k vs 14k vs 18k white gold: what the numbers mean

Karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold, out of 24 parts. The stamp on the clasp usually shows it as karat (10K, 14K, 18K) or as parts per thousand (417, 585, 750).

Karat Pure gold Common stamp What it means for a chain
10k white gold 41.7% 10K or 417 Harder and cheaper than 14k and 18k. The least gold of the three.
14k white gold 58.3% 14K or 585 The usual chain choice. Good balance of hardness, color and price.
18k white gold 75% 18K or 750 Softer and pricier for the same weight. More gold, but the extra gold is hidden under the rhodium.
18K white gold plated A thin surface layer only Should be labeled as plated Same look on day one at a fraction of the price. The color depends on the plating lasting.

For a chain that rubs against your neck and shirt every day, higher karat does not mean better. 18k is softer than 14k, and since both are rhodium plated, you will not see the difference in color. Most men buying solid white gold should start at 14k.

Solid white gold vs white gold plated: which one should you buy?

This is the real decision behind most searches for a white gold chain for men. Here is the honest side-by-side.

Solid white gold chain White gold plated chain
What it is 10k to 18k white gold all the way through, usually rhodium plated A white gold or rhodium finish over another metal
What sets the price Gram weight, karat and the gold price that day Design, stones and how the plating is applied
When the surface wears Pale gray-yellow white gold shows. A jeweler can re-plate it The base metal can start to show. Check the warranty
Resale value Has scrap value based on its gold content Little to none
Iced styles with stones Very expensive once you add diamonds Common, often with CZ, moissanite or lab-grown diamond
Best for A plain chain you want to keep for decades, and buyers who care about metal value The look of a white gold chain, especially an iced one, at a price most people can buy

If you want a plain white gold Cuban or rope chain to wear for 20 years and maybe sell one day, buy solid 14k and check the weight. If you want an iced tennis, Cuban or Monaco chain that looks expensive, plated is how they are usually made at a price most people will pay. We go deeper on that trade-off in our guide to solid gold vs plated gold.

What the rules say: under the US FTC Guides for the Jewelry Industry (16 CFR Part 23, read November 7, 2026), "gold" with a karat mark should describe metal that is that karat throughout, a plated piece should be described as plated, and a hollow gold chain may mislead unless it is disclosed as hollow. If a listing just says "white gold" with no karat and no word about plating, ask before you buy.

How much does a white gold chain for men cost?

For solid white gold, the starting point is the gold inside it. Here is the math, so you can check any price you see:

  1. Find the chain's weight in grams on the listing.
  2. Multiply by the purity: 0.417 for 10k, 0.583 for 14k, 0.75 for 18k. That is the grams of pure gold.
  3. Multiply by today's gold price per gram (the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1).

Example: a 40-gram 14k white gold chain holds about 23.3 grams of pure gold. At a gold price of $4,000 an ounce (about $128.60 a gram), that is roughly $3,000 of gold before any labor, plating, shipping or store markup. The same 40 grams in 18k holds 30 grams of gold, about $3,860 at that price. These are worked examples, not today's gold price, so check the live spot price on the day you buy.

Two things push the real price up from there: the store's markup on labor and design, and palladium, which costs more than nickel as the whitening metal. Two things can make a "cheap" solid chain look better value than it is: hollow links, which save gold but dent more easily, and listings that leave the weight out.

White gold plated chains are priced on design and stones, not metal weight. Here are ours, as of November 7, 2026:

Chain Width Price (USD)
Moissanite Micro Tennis Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 1.5mm $249.99 to $269.99
3mm Moissanite Tennis Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 3mm $349.99 to $386.99
5mm Moissanite Tennis Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 5mm $449.99 to $469.99
6mm Moissanite Tennis Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 6mm $569.99 to $659.99
13mm Moissanite Cuban Chain - Silver - D COLOR - VVS1 13mm $489.99 to $549.99
20mm Moissanite Monaco Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 20mm $689.99 to $719.99
10mm Moissanite Clustered Tennis Chain - Silver - D Color - VVS1 10mm $769.99 to $799.99

Price ranges cover the different lengths. Each of these lists its material as 18K white gold plating with PVD reinforcement. None of them is solid white gold, and we don't describe them that way.

Best white gold chain styles for men

The style matters more than the karat for how a chain looks on you. These are the main ones:

Cuban link

Flat, tightly interlocked oval links. The classic men's chain in plain white gold, and the base for iced Cuban chains with stones on every link. Plain solid white gold Cubans get heavy, and expensive, quickly as the width goes up. Check the gram weight before you compare prices.

Tennis chain

A single row of stones, each in its own setting, linked edge to edge. In white gold or a white gold finish it gives the brightest, iciest look of any chain. 3mm to 5mm is the everyday range; 6mm and up is a statement piece.

Rope chain

Twisted strands that catch light without stones. A solid white gold rope is a good plain option because the twist hides small scratches.

Franco and box chains

Tight, square-profile links that are strong for their weight. Popular as plain white gold chains for pendants.

Monaco and clustered chains

Wide, fully iced links built to be the main piece. These are usually made plated and stone-set, because a solid white gold version set with natural diamonds would cost many times more.

White gold vs silver vs platinum chains

All three look white, so here is how they really differ:

  • White gold: a gold alloy, usually rhodium plated. Bright white while the plating is fresh. Needs re-plating now and then.
  • Sterling silver: 92.5% silver. Cheaper than white gold and slightly grayer. It tarnishes, so many silver chains are rhodium plated too, which makes them look close to white gold.
  • Platinum: naturally white, very dense and the most expensive. It doesn't need plating to look white, but it does develop a soft gray patina over time.

Side by side, a freshly rhodium plated white gold chain and a rhodium plated silver chain can look almost identical. The stamp, the weight and the price tell them apart, not the color.

6 checks before you buy a white gold chain for men

  1. Karat and stamp. Look for 10K/417, 14K/585 or 18K/750 near the clasp, plus a maker's mark. Our guide on how to tell if a chain is real gold walks through stamps, magnets and acid tests.
  2. Gram weight. A solid chain's price only makes sense next to its weight. No weight listed usually means a lighter or hollow chain.
  3. Solid or hollow. Hollow links are cheaper but dent and are hard to repair. The listing should say so.
  4. Plating stated plainly. On a plated chain, the plating metal and karat should be written out, for example "18K white gold plating." Vague words like "white gold tone" or "white gold finish" with nothing else are a reason to ask.
  5. The clasp. Lobster clasps and box clasps with a safety latch are the most secure on heavy chains. Spring rings are fine on thin chains only.
  6. Length and warranty. Check the length against your neck (see our chain lengths for men chart) and read what the warranty covers, especially for plating wear.

Our white gold plated moissanite chains: what you actually get

Since you are reading this on our site, here is exactly what our white gold chains are, using the words on the product pages:

  • Metal: each product lists its material as "18K white gold plating," applied through a multi-stage electrochemical process with PVD reinforcement. They are not solid white gold.
  • Stones: D color VVS1 moissanite, with a GRA report included. Moissanite passes a standard diamond tester.
  • Warranty: every piece comes with a lifetime warranty card. As of November 7, 2026, our warranty policy covers manufacturing defects, breakage during normal wear, loose or lost stones, and fading, discoloration or tarnishing of the finish. It does not cover loss, deliberate damage, repairs by anyone else, or damage from chlorine, bleach and abrasive cleaners.

If you want a plain white gold chain as a long-term store of value, solid 14k is the better buy and we would tell you that in person. If you want the iced white gold look, our men's moissanite chains give you that at a price set by the design and stones, not the gold price.

White gold chain for men: common questions

Is a white gold chain real gold?
Solid white gold is real gold: a 14k white gold chain is 58.3% pure gold mixed with white metals. A white gold plated chain is different. The gold sits in a thin surface layer over another metal, and US rules say it should be sold as plated, not as 14k or 18k gold.

Does a white gold chain turn yellow?
Solid white gold can start to look slightly warm as its rhodium plating wears, because the alloy underneath is pale yellow-gray. A jeweler can re-plate it. A plated chain can fade too, which is why the warranty on a plated piece matters.

Is 14k or 18k white gold better for a chain?
14k is the usual pick for a chain. It is harder and cheaper than 18k, and the color difference is hidden under rhodium plating anyway. 18k holds more gold, so it costs more for the same weight.

How much is a white gold chain for men?
A solid white gold chain is priced mainly on its gram weight, its karat and the gold price that day, so even a mid-weight 14k chain can cost thousands of dollars. White gold plated chains cost far less: our white gold plated moissanite chains start at $249.99 as of November 7, 2026.

Can you wear a white gold chain in the shower?
Water alone will not hurt solid white gold, but soap, chlorine and cleaning products wear rhodium and plating faster. Take any plated chain off before pools, hot tubs and cleaning. Our lifetime warranty does not cover damage from chlorine, bleach or abrasive cleaners.

What width white gold chain should a man wear?
For a first chain on its own, 3mm to 5mm at 20 inches suits most men. Go 8mm and up when you want the chain to be the main piece, or 1.5mm to 3mm if you will hang a pendant on it.
